Chancellor Agrawal began his tenure at UMKC in June 2018 after serving 15 years at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he began as a faculty member and moved his way up to vice president of research and interim provost. Prior to that, he served as dean of the UTSA College of Engineering.
In addition to being an experienced leader and award-winning educator, Chancellor Agrawal has an extensive list of professional accolades. A native of India and a U.S. citizen, he is a bioengineer, former auto industry executive, an inventor and an entrepreneur whose bioengineering research group has been responsible for starting three companies in San Antonio.

Two of Chancellor Agrawal’s favorite bragging points are that he is one of four engineers in his family – his wife, Sue Agrawal, also has an engineering background as well as son Ethan, who graduated from Rice University with a degree in chemical engineering, and daughter Serena, who is studying mechanical engineering there – and that he is an oil- painting hobbyist.

His passion and proven track record for increasing research and on-campus student engagement are both integral parts of his plan to keep UMKC moving forward into the 21st century.
