Event Description:
Join us on Thursday, March 26, as we welcome to Kansas City Mr. Matthias Klaus, Head of the Trade Section at the German Embassy in Washington D.C. As Head of the Trade Section, he manages the economic, business, investment, and trade portfolio for Germany in the United States. Over lunch, Mr. Klaus will give brief remarks and take questions on the transatlantic relationship and trade affairs between Germany and the United States. 

Germany is consistently a top trading partner for Kansas City reaching $337 million in exports in 2018. It is considered the largest market in the European Union with the wealthiest consumers, offering excellent opportunities for Kansas City businesses. 

This event is made possible through partnership with the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany.

About our Speaker: 

Prior to his post in Washington D.C., Mr. Klaus was Head of Office of Minister of State (Deputy Foreign Minister) Prof. Dr. Maria Bohmer in the Foreign Ministry. The remit covered external economic policy and sustainable development issues, cultural relations and education policy, Germany's United Nations and global policies. In terms of world regions, the work focused on the countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean as well as South and South-East Asia. 

Prior to that he was Director for Central Europa in the Foreign Ministry. In his time in the Federal Chancellery he was Deputy Director with responsibilities for Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East. He also worked in the Division for Cabinet and parliamentary Affairs as a liaison diplomat with the German Bundestag. He has served at German Missions in Washington (Spokesperson), London (Cultural Attache), and Warsaw (Press Attache). He is a certified Peace Negotiator with Swiss, Norwegian and German training. 

He studied Medieval and Modern History, German and English Literature and Philosophy in Munster and at the Free University in Berlin. He is an elected member of the Board of the German Shakespeare Society of 1864. He is married to Sylvie Teisseire-Klause, they have three children.
