Project, delivered by McCownGordon Construction, will advance to the publication’s national competition

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (August 25, 2017) The sanctuary building at the United Methodists Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas has been selected by Engineering News-Record Midwest for a 2017 Best Project award in the magazine’s annual Best Projects competition. The project, designed by HGC Architects and Engineers, was recognized in the Cultural/Worship category.

The 3,500-seat sanctuary building for the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection is the centerpiece of a $93 million capital improvement plan. The elliptical-shape sanctuary has seven stainless steel-clad exterior panels, or "sails," rising to a pinnacle of 104 feet and 6 inches above the ground below.  The focal point of the sanctuary is the 93-foot-wide by 35-foot-tall Resurrection Window. The window was created using fused-glass technology and was installed above a 15-foot-tall by 103-foot wide video display.

“It was a great honor to deliver this significant project for the members of the Church of the Resurrection, said Ramin Cherafat, chief operating officer for McCownGordon Construction. “Our team, led by Arlen Kleinsorge and JP Elliott, included more than 20 trade partner firms and truly represents the collaboration and partnership it needed to build a complex project such as this one.”

According to Pastor Adam Hamilton, the building fulfills the Church’s vision of a sacred space that is built well and built to last. The Sanctuary, which celebrated its grand opening with a formal ribbon cutting on April 1, 2017, is located on the main campus of the Church of the Resurrection. The Church has over 22,000 members and is the largest United Methodist church in the United States.
