UMKC Gallery of Art, Black Studies Program Sponsors Exhibit
The UMKC Gallery of Art, UMKC Black Studies Program and the Bernardin Haskell Lecture Series present an exhibit with Jared Thorne, “Every Day Contains All of History.” The exhibit will run Thursday, Oct. 19 through Friday, Nov. 17 at the UMKC Gallery of Art, Room 203, Fine Arts Building, 5015 Holmes St., Kansas City, Mo.
An Opening Reception for his exhibit is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19 at the UMKC Gallery of Art.
Thorne will also lecture about the exhibit as well as his substantial body of work in Lens 2 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 4525 Oak St., Kansas City, Mo., at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13. Attendance to the lecture is free and tickets are available online.
As a black Black artist investigating the culture of his own people, Thorne seeks to challenge hegemonic as well as self-imposed constructs of black identity in America and beyond. This series continues his longstanding work exploring American cultural and structural responses to black bodies – blackness not as a construct or an idea but as a literal and physical presence in our national life. Specifically, how do reflections of black history shape our culture? How does the act of archiving that history inform how black identity is perceived and received?
