Join us for the January Leadership Up Close with Peter Vermes, Head Coach and Manager for Sporting Kansas City!  Vermes is currently the longest tenured head coach in MLS and has won four major trophies as a manager, the second most of all active coaches in MLS.  He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team.

As a player, Vermes spent several seasons playing in Hungary before establishing himself as a defender in the MLS and ultimately joining the Wizards in 2000. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors while helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. Vermes was also a regular member of the United States national team throughout the 1990s, and represented his country at the 1988 Summer Olympics, the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
He retired in 2002 and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2013.

Vermes took the helm as manager in 2009 and served as the club’s technical director from 2006-2018.  In January 2019, Vermes won the inaugural MLS Sporting Executive of the Year award for his exemplary leadership, dedication and strategic vision in guiding Sporting KC to success.
