Through historical context and educational research, Dr. Smith’s book seeks to dispel the age-old myth that African Americans stand in the way, and even thwart the progress of other African Americans. The long-held idea that the African-American community has adopted a mindset of “If I can’t have it, neither can you” is not rooted in truth, but yet another complex and illusive indication of America’s racialize history.
