KU Launches Data Analytics Boot Camp

Twenty-four week continuing education program teaches fundamental data science, analytics skills.
 
OVERLAND PARK (Sept. 14, 2017) – KU Professional & Continuing Education announces today the launch of the Data Analytics Boot Camp, a 24-week skills-development, non-degree program, teaching the fundamental data science and analytics skills increasingly sought after in today’s data-driven digital economy. This launch comes at a time when the projected investment in data science is at an all-time high, with the worldwide big data analytics market expected to reach over $200 billion by 2020*.
 
The KU Data Analytics Boot Camp, offered in partnership with Trilogy Education Services, starts on Nov. 28, 2017, and is designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals, with two three-hour evening classes during the week (6:30-9:30 pm) and a four-hour class on Saturdays (10 a.m.-2 p.m.).
 
“As with all our education programs, the KU Data Analytics Boot Camp helps working adults increase their professional skills and serves an important need in the Kansas City and Kansas economies,” said David Cook, vice chancellor of the KU Edwards Campus. “Graduates of the boot camp will have in-demand 21st-century skills, and the local organizations that employ them will have a powerful competitive advantage in their marketplace.”
 
“It is currently predicted by 2018 there will be 1.5 million more data science job openings than candidates to fill these positions,” says Dan Sommer, Founder and CEO of Trilogy Education. “The KU Data Analytics Boot Camp is one more example of the power of continuing education to help provide students with job-ready technical skills while providing a much-needed talent pipeline to local employers. The curriculum includes instruction in high-demand technologies and frameworks including Advanced Excel, Python, JavaScript (D3.js, Leaflet.js), HTML/CSS, API Interactions, Social Media Mining, SQL, Hadoop, Tableau, Advanced Statistics, Machine Learning, R, Git/GitHub and more. In addition to classroom instruction, students will spend 20 hours a week on outside projects and experiential learning activities and build a professional project portfolio to showcase their abilities and hone their competitive edge in the employment market.
 
Students will also receive a range of career services including portfolio reviews, technical and behavioral interview training, resume editing, networking and help conducting their job search. Area businesses participating in the KU Data Analytics Boot Camp’s employer network will advise on curriculum, products and student needs. While no previous training or experience is required, applicants should have an understanding of coding basics.
